Enterprise Rent-A-Car to Lay Off 170 NYC Staffs

Enterprise Rent-A-Car has revealed that it is laying off more than 170 New York City shuttle bus drivers, which amounts to nearly 40 per cent of its area workforce.

Alamo Rent-A-Car and National Car Rental, Enterprise subsidiaries, made the announcement about the layoff of the shuttle drivers, which will occur by the end of July 2009.

Recently, Enterprise filed a WARN notice with the Department of Labor in New York, citing the economic downturn as the reason for the layoffs at the West 77th Street location. Employees affected by the layoff operate shuttles to Newark airport, providing passenger pick-up services throughout Manhattan’s neighborhoods.

Last week, in a memo distributed to company employees, Enterprise vice president Jason Altman said: “We have considered the possibility of this arrangement for several years and in these tough economic times, we believe we must take this action now to take advantage of all operational efficiencies possible.”

From 1 August, Alamo and National will outsource Newark airport shuttle services through Cavalry Staffing and Select Staffing. Alamo and National drivers who are laid off are being encouraged to interview with the two staffing firms for possible employment.

Approximately 285 employees will continued to employed to service New York City customers.
